In the spirit of Halloween, the director of Nicole Kidman’s hit film, Practical Magic, claims the blockbuster was cursed during production by a witch hired as a ‘consultant.’
The movie, which was released in 1998 is a fan-favorite for Hallows Eve. It sees the Hollywood actress star alongside on-screen sister Sandra Bullock, who are descended from a line of witches. Rather fitting for the festive season.
Director claims Nicole Kidman film was ‘cursed by a witch’
Two decades after the film’s release, director Griffin Dunne is now speaking out about the incident. They told Vanity Fair: “It’s something I will talk about now, but at the time I would sort of deny it. I didn’t want the vibe.”
The person in question, who has not been named, was hired as a witch consultant to get the details of the ceremony for the film. Dunne said she was “very, very helpful,” and they “got along great.”
He claims she was ‘handsomely’ paid by Warner Bros, and he put her up in a nice hotel in LA to meet Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock who were ‘dying to meet her.’
“When the producer called, she was greatly offended and wanted three gross points [from the film’s profit]. She wanted to publish a Practical Magic cookbook and reportedly said: “You can’t buy me off with a hotel.”
“She left a curse in some sort of tongue on my voicemail – that was quite chilling, actually – and threatened to sue Warner Bros,” he told the publication.
Dunne then claims he took the recording to the legal department, who allegedly said “f*** this” before writing her a check.
When asked if the curse had any effects on the set or the cast, Griffin explained how a crew member’s elderly father died of a heart attack before shooting.
Everybody then said “it was the witch”. However, the director said he didn’t want to have those conversations on his set.
Barbra Streisand wanted to buy the house from the film

It looked like Hollywood icon Barbra Streisand wasn’t scared of any curse. Dunne has also previously revealed she loved the rustic house from the film so much that she contacted him to say: “I want the kitchen.”
However, even celebrities like Barbra can’t get everything they want, as unfortunately, the home didn’t actually exist.
The house was a fictional film set, an architectural shell, and had, of course, been torn down shortly after the film wrapped up filming.
